Traffic is flowing again now on 16th Street, after being closed for about an hour between Euclid St. and Columbia Rd. NW. while police and fire departments responded to a reported gas leak at the Embassy of Switzerland Cuban Interests Section.

Pete Piringer, Director of Public Information for E.M.S. and the Fire Department, says that the facility at 2630 16th St. is now safe for habitation. “Hazardous materials personnel we’re given entrance, and we were able to just assist them with some ventilation,” he says.

Gas Leak Cleared at Cuban Interests Section
Photo by Mr. T in DC A gas leak earlier today inside the Cuban Interests Section of the Swiss Embassy caused part of 16th Street NW to be closed between Euclid St. and Columbia Rd. The road has since reopened and Washington Gas Co. was on the scene to address the leak.

The firefighters who were granted entry then helped the Cubans partially evacuate and air out the building, located at 2630 16th St. NW, Piringer said. But, he said, it appeared that some parts of the facility were not made available to the firefighters.
